I’ve been waiting for this cover for a long time and I know I’m not the only one. Well, the wait is over…! First revealed at Tor.com this afternoon and now making its rounds across the blogspherey universe, is the cover for Laura Lam’s second book, Shadowplay.
The sequel to Pantomime and the second Micah Grey book (can there be a third, Strange Chem, please???), Shadowplay is set to be a stellar hit, if Lam’s debut is anything to go by. Heck – even Robin Hobb has good things to say about Pantomime and Laura!
Shadowplay reads a little something like this:
The circus lies behind Micah Grey in dust and ashes.
He and the white clown, Drystan, take refuge with the once-great
magician, Jasper Maske.
When Maske agrees to teach them his trade, his
embittered rival challenges them to a duel which could decide all of
their fates. People also hunt both Micah and the person he was before
the circus–the runaway daughter of a noble family. And Micah
discovers there is magic and power in the world, far beyond the card
tricks and illusions he’s perfecting…
A tale of phantom wings, a clockwork hand, and the delicate unfurling
of new love, Shadowplay continues Micah Grey’s extraordinary journey.
The cover is stunning of course, complete with all the drama and mystery that I’ve been expecting. I had a sneaky peek at the art for the cover a while back and nothing compares with seeing it finished and shining. It’s a piece of art in and of itself. The colour, the composition, the everything.
My little sister, the artsy one, is going to go nuts over this cover. I love the cards (fortune telling cards, tarot cards or something else?) and absolutely adore the girl on the front. Maybe it’s “Gene”, with Micah under a glamour or illusion of some kind (hinted at, maybe, by the cover copy? Or maybe I’m thinking too much!) to look that way – all the better to hide from the people hunting both of them! Definitely excited for Maske and for this duel. Nothing about Shadowplay seems as though it’s going to be dull. More Drystan, more Micah and more of the wonderful world of Ellada. I’m so there.
It’s beautiful and it so perfectly fits the tone of the Micah Grey series so far. I’m kind of in love, guys, and fanboying all over the place right now,
Check out Laura on her website, but otherwise get some pre-ordering done and start counting down the days until Shadowplay hits the stores. More buying info is available on the Strange Chemistry website.
